Tasting Notes

The 2021 No. 1 Barossa Shiraz is a deep, almost black wine with red-purple hues that hint at its richness and intensity. On the nose, it reveals an array of complex aromas, with rich blackberry and spiced plums taking centre stage, and a perfumed floral lift adding an elegant touch. The palate is full-bodied and bursting with flavours of ripe raspberry, black cherry, and pepper. The wine has a mouth-filling rich structure, and the tannins are firm but well-integrated, providing a silky texture and an excellent balance to the wine. This is a long, generous, and textural wine that impresses with its elegance and finesse. The French oak finish adds an extra layer of complexity and depth, seamlessly integrating with the fruit flavours to create a harmonious whole.

Winemaking

Harvested during the cool of night and at optimal flavour, tannin and sugar levels for premium Barossa Shiraz. The grapes were then destemmed and fermented in 10 tonne static fermenters and pumped over twice daily. After 10 days on skins the wine was pressed off into stainless steel tanks to complete malolactic fermentation. Once both primary and secondary fermentation was complete, the wine was filled to oak of which 20% was new to mature for 22 month prior to bottling.

Wine Critic Reviews

96 Points - Wine Pilot

This is something really special. Granted, not priced for everyday drinking, but it is a bargain when compared to many prestige releases. Again, twenty-two months maturation in oak, 20% of which was new.

An opaque maroon colour, there is certainly an oak influence evident here, but it is well integrated. Everything about this wine screams quality, especially the fruit. Richly flavoured with notes of chocolate, nutmeg, hints of vanilla, coffee beans, plums, cocoa powder and blackberries. The wine is finely balanced with impressive length, with intensity running the full journey and never wavering, before finishing with sleek and silky tannins. This is perfect for fans of big, bold and richly flavoured Barossa Shiraz. A cracker.

96 Points - Sam Kim

Opulent and complex, the alluring bouquet shows dark fruit intensity, cedar, clove, star anise, and dark cocoa characters, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate packed with delectable flavours backed by fleshy texture and loads of silky tannins. Sumptuous and captivating with a sustained,
satisfying finish. At its best: now to 2038.

Vintage Report

The 2021 growing season had all the hallmarks of a classic vintage. Consistent warm temperatures without hot days produced perfect conditions for our red varieties to ripen. This along with good winter rains and a dry harvest period resulted in wines with great depth of varietal flavours, excellent tannin structure and colour along with a long and balanced finish. Reds from 2021 will age well due to their intense concentration and power.
